What is Reiki?

Reiki is a kind of the alternative medicine, in which the technique of so called “hands-on-healing” or massage is used. It is also classified as a kind of the “oriental medicine”.
According to the characteristics (requirements) of the International standard, the Reiki practice belongs to healing “Healers of folk medicine and healers healing by suggestion and prayers”.

The Reiki practice was established in 1922 by the Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui. The word “Reiki” consists of two hieroglyphs: “rei” and “ki”. In Japanese “rei” has the meaning “universe”, “spirit”, “soul”. “Ki” means “energy”, “mind”, “attitude of mind”. In English-speaking countries, Reiki is also called “universal life energy”.

The official date of the creation of the system Usui Reiki is 1922. It was the period when Mikao Usui established a healer’s association in Tokio. He called it „Usui Reiki Ryoho“, that means „Association of Usui System of Reiki Healing“. Mikao Usui became its first President. After his death, he was followed as the head of the association by his nearest mentees and followers. The association created by Mikao Usui exists in Japan to the present day.
Mikao Usui’s system is based on the experience and traditions of the oriental medicine and the Taoist energy practice. The creation of the system was influenced greatly by the learning of the practices of Shintoism and Buddhism. Some techniques which are described in Mikao Usui’s guidance on the healing had been known long before the emerging of the Usui System.

The story of the creation of Reiki is akin to many other spiritual searches. In a difficult period of his life, Mikao Usui betook himself to look for the “meaning of life”. According to the old Japanese traditions, people go on a pilgrimage to the holy places in difficult moments of their life to find the answers to the critical questions. On the lines of his Buddhist practice, Mikao Usui began to meditate in the temples of the sacred Mount Kurama (the symbols used in Reiki now can be found in the mandalas and at the walls of the chapels and temples of the sacred mountain). In the course of the last meditation, his aim was achieved; und Mikao Usui experienced an interaction with a powerful spiritual energy.

On completing of his searches, Mikao Usui came back home to adjust the life of his family and to try the new system in action. In his judgement, it was effective, and Mikao Usui decided to make Reiki Ryoho accessible for all people. However, to be able to use his system in practice, Mikao Usui had to prove the livability, wholesomeness and harmlessness of Reiki in course of several years working with people. After the space of seven years, Mikao Usui represented the results of his researches to the Government and after receiving an approval, he established his first school. He founded a spiritual association of healers who work according to the system of natural healing through laying-on-of-hands Usui Reiki Ryoho as a “free system”, so that it is accessible to everyone who wants to practice it, and no one could put in a claim to own it. Mikao Usiu had numerous mentees, some of them he consecrate to “Masters” (“Teachers of the System”).

Five principles of Reiki
Mikao Usui believed that a healthy body is determined be the healthy mind. That is why he recommended to follow the five life rules of the Emperor Meiji. One of the translations of the text which Mikao Usui used to give to his mentees is presented below.

Shōfuku no hihō, Manbyō no reiyaku.
The secret art to achieve happiness.
The miraculous remedy against all the illnesses.

Kyō dake wa: Just for today:
— Okoru na, — Don’t be angry,
— Shinpai su na, — Don’t worry,
— Kansha shite, — Be grateful,
— Gyō wo hakeme, — Do your best,
— Hito ni shinsetsu ni.—Be kind to others.

Asayū gasshō shite kokoro ni nenji,
Kuchi ni tonae yo.

Every morning and every evening, fold your hands in prayer.
Let these words coming out of your mouth become the prayer of your heart.
